    Stilpnomelane has occurrences in banded iron formations, slates, schists, blueschist and greenschist facies, as well as some metamorphosed massive sulfide deposits. It is somewhat uncommon, occurring in locations such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, England, Sweden, the USA, Canada, Western Australia and New South Wales in Australia.
